Four Morongo Basin elementary schools earned Gold Ribbon Awards by the California Department of Education for making gains in academic content and performance standards. The gains were made in language arts, math, language development, and science. Last year, the award recognized middle and high schools. The Morongo Basin’s Gold Ribbon Schools include Landers Elementary (Principal John Lowe), Morongo Valley Elementary (Principal Georgianne Pope), Yucca Mesa Elementary (Principal Matthew Gay), and Twentynine Palms Elementary (Principal Kristie Mahan). The state honored 772 elementary schools, out of 6,000 that were eligible.
