Four months after a crash that killed two teenagers in Morongo Valley, the California Highway Patrol is still conducting its investigation. On June 12, Nicole Packer is suspected of driving her Ford Fiesta on Highway 62 while under the influence of alcohol and crashing at a high rate of speed into a Toyota Prius that was making a left-hand turn into the Circle K about 10:30 p.m. Hart Campbell, 14, and Ruby Campbell, 17, both died at local trauma hospitals a few hours later. Their parents, Colin Campbell, and Gail Lerner, were seriously injured and taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, as was Packer, 33. The case against Packer has not yet been turned over to the District Attorney’s office and no charges have been filed yet against Packer. The CHP said at the time of the crash that its investigation would likely take several months. A source told Z107.7 News that Packer has retained an attorney in anticipation of charges. Nicole Packer has at least one conviction for driving under the influence, in 2012, and a conviction in 2016 for driving while her license was suspended for DUI.
