A former Morongo Basin sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to two years in prison and will have to register for life as a sex offender after a plea agreement to charges of having sex with female inmates at the Morongo Basin Station jail. The County District Attorney’s Office said Brian Derryberry was sentenced February 1. Derryberry, who was 24 years old and the married father of a 1-year-old boy at the time of his arrest in July 2016, pleaded guilty December 4 in Victorville Superior Court to two of the counts, seven other charges against Derryberry were dismissed. Derryberry had been a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy for two years at the time of his arrest. In addition to his prison sentence and sex-offender registration, Derryberry will have to undergo mental health screenings before he is paroled. Derryberry, who state records show had been a licensed real estate agent, was fired as a deputy one week after his arrest.
