Substances such as oil and other vehicle fluids can build up on roadways over time. When mixed with rain water, they create a slick layer on the road that can cause vehicles to hydroplane, sliding on the roadway without control of the vehicle. To reduce the chance of an accident, drivers are urged to do the following: make sure your tires have appropriate tread and air pressure and test your windshield wipers. While driving, reduce your speed, leave space between vehicles, turn on your headlights, never use cruise control, avoid sudden acceleration and braking, and never drive through standing water or closed flood areas. Turn around, don’t drown!
