FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: SMOKE ALARM SAFETY TIPS

This week is fire prevention week which aims to educate the public on simple and important safety measures they can take to be fire safe. Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly. Ernest Figueroa offers these smoke alarm safety tips…

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area, on every level of your home. Large homes may need extra alarms, and it is best to use interconnected smoke alarms so that when one sounds, they all do. Try to test your smoke alarms once a month and consider buying a smoke alarm with a carbon monoxide detector. With advances in technology, smoke alarms have gotten smarter, resulting in less false alarms for you. Smoke alarms should be on the ceiling or high on a wall and be sure to keep them at least 10 feet above the stove and a bit away from the kitchen to cut down on those false alarms. Finally, replace your smoke alarm unit every 10 years.
