FIRE AT BURRTEC FRIDAY REKINDLES SATURDAY

Firefighters were called back Saturday evening to the scene of a fire at Burrtec, when smoldering trash re-ignited. About 5:15 p.m. Friday, trash inside a half-acre enclosure caught on fire, and units from Yucca Valley, Yucca Mesa, Joshua Tree, Morongo Valley, CalFire, the Combat Center, and Twentynine Palms all responded. The burning trash was surrounded by Conex boxes, and the Conex boxes were surrounded by tall cement K-rail walls. County Fire Captain Jay Dimoff said during Friday’s fire, some of the embers had blown into an inaccessible area between the Conex boxes and K-rails. Dimoff said firefighters hoped the embers would go out by themselves, but he said they left their hoses in place just in case the embers flared up. About 8 p.m. Saturday, Yucca Valley firefighters were called back to Burrtec’s recycling facility on Old Woman Springs Road and Buena Vista in Yucca Valley to put out the small fire that had re-ignited.
