FIRE AND CRASH IN TWENTYNINE PALMS SUNDAY

Twentynine Palms firefighters were busy Sunday, responding to both a structure fire and a traffic collision. About 1:50 p.m., the Twentynine Palms Fire Department received multiple calls of a house fire on Kaiser Road, near Morongo Road, in the Desert Heights area of Twentynine Palms. According to firefighter Lane McGivern, the first responding units from Twentynine Palms had to remove a locked gate to enter the property, and found a well-established fire in a small, garage-type structure in the 71800 block of Zepher Road. McGivern said strong winds fanned the blaze and threatened additional buildings and vehicles, but aggressive action by the firefighters kept the fire from spreading any further.  In addition, electrical power lines hampered firefighters until Southern California Edison employees could turn off the power to the property. Firefighters from both Twentynine Palms and the Combat Center found a garage, vehicle, and debris fully involved in flames, but were able to contain the blaze within minutes.  Damage was estimated at about $10,000; the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Then shortly after 9 p.m., a woman needed to be extricated from her vehicle due to a traffic collision on Adobe Road, just south of Indian Trail. The Combat Center also assisted with this call. The woman was transported to a local hospital; the driver of the other vehicle was not injured. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
