FIGHTING CACTI WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SPLITS A PAIR OF GAMES AT VICTOR VALLEY TOURNAMENT

By Assistant Coach Johnette Brown

The Copper Mountain College women’s basketball team ended the weekend in Victor Valley going 1-1 in their two games. Friday’s game had the Fighting Cacti up against host Victor Valley. A strong second quarter, led by a great defensive effort, gave the Cacti a four-point halftime lead. The ladies lost the lead early in the third quarter against a prolific Victor Valley offense and were playing from behind the remainder of the half. The deficit was cut to two points twice in the fourth quarter, but that is as close as the Cacti would get. Victor Valley won the contest 69-64.

Chey Bogan-Osbey (from Twentynine Palms High School) turned in her best game of the year tallying 22 points and pulling down 22 rebounds. Lelisa Watson (Page, AZ HS) contributed 18 points and five assists and Richara Grandberry (Banning HS) had 11 points in the loss.

Saturday, the Copper Mountain Ladies faced Imperial Valley College. The Fighting Cacti turned in a tremendous defensive effort for 40 minutes, holding the Arabs to 44 points for the entire game. The Cacti, up 17 after three quarters, cruised to the 55-44 victory and improved their record to 2-3 on the season.

LeLisa Watson filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, four assists, and three steals, while shooting 70 percent from the field. Chey Bogan-Osbey had 12 points and Richara Grandberry contributed 11. Tusia Brown (Twentynine Palms HS) had  team highs with 13 rebounds and five blocked shots to go along with her eight points.

The ladies are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to San Diego to take on Mesa College.
