In local sports, the Copper Mountain men’s basketball team, the “Fighting Cacti,” was in action Friday night, travelling to the Imperial Valley to take on the Arabs of Imperial Valley College. CMC won the game 89-72. Copper Mountain improves to 10-6 on the year
It has been a couple of weeks since the Fighting Cacti have been in action, but it didn’t take long for them to get going. Early on, great play from freshman guard Will Valsien and sophomore forward Dominique Anderson helped CMC go into halftime with the lead 40-32.
Great execution, high energy, and dominating play from sophomore guard Anthony Rice was the key for Copper Mountain in the second half. Monster blocks from freshman forward Zack Kroker and multiple “and 1” drives from Rice allowed the Fighting Cacti to pull away and never look back.
CMC went on to win the game 89-72.
Anthony Rice led CMC with 22 points and seven assists. Dominique Anderson had a great game with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Will Valsien added 10 points, five assists, and three steals. Kenny Bates chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
Copper Mountain improved to 10-6 on the year and the team looks to gain momentum from the win as they head into Orange Empire conference play Wednesday, January 9, at Santiago Canyon. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
