FAULTY WIRING BLAMED FOR FIRE THAT DESTROYED TWENTYNINE PALMS TRAVEL TRAILER

Faulty wiring is believed to be responsible for a fire that destroyed a travel trailer in Twentynine Palms yesterday. According to Fire Captain Matt Helmkamp, firefighters arrived in the 1000 block of Canyon Road about 5:20 p.m. to find the travel trailer fully involved in flames, and threatening two nearby mobile homes. Firefighters from the Combat Center assisted, and the fire was knocked down quickly. While the travel trailer is a total loss, firefighters helped the residents retrieve some of their valuables from the ruins. Helmkamp said it appeared the travel trailer, which was being used as a temporary residence while a mother and daughter fixed up the two adjacent mobile homes, had been wired improperly into the nearby homes’ permanent wiring. Helmkamp estimated the loss at $50,000.
