A Twentynine Palms family lost their cat during a fire Monday afternoon. County Fire Battalion Chief Dan Filter said firefighters from Twentynine Palms, Wonder Valley, Joshua Tree, and the Combat Center responded to a dryer on fire in the 72800 block of Cactus Drive at 12:51 p.m. Filter said the entire single-story home was filled with smoke down to the floor when they arrived. The flames spread from the dryer into the kitchen, but firefighters managed to keep the blaze from spreading into the attic. Filter said the fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes. The residents managed to get out of the house safely, but smoke inhalation killed the cat which had been hiding in another room.
