In the depth of summer, we can look forward to fall in the desert and to the annual Highway 62 Art Tour. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells us how it’s shaping up this year…
Generally recognized at the Hi-Desert’s most beautiful month, thousands blanket Morongo Basin each October for rich displays of color, sound and creative expression. Locals and visitors can anticipate more of the same at this year’s 11th annual HWY 62 Art Tours, produced by the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council. Nearly 200 artists, musicians and performers will open their studios and homes the last two weekends of October to share their passion, inspiration and art in what has grown to be the art event of the Hi-Desert. Last year an estimated 6,000 visitors took part in the HWY 62 Art Tours, making it this area’s largest annual community event. The Tours feature artists who are locally and internationally known and encompasses a range of disciplines including painting, photography and sculpture. The first weekend spotlights the western Morongo Basin, including Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley Joshua Tree and Landers. Focus shifts to the east on the second weekend, to include Twentynine Palms and Wonder Valley. More at HWY62arttours.com.
