Experimental Sounds show hosted by local avant-electro-junkshop duo Phog Masheen this Saturday at the Beatnik Lounge

Another Experimental Sounds show will take place at the Beatnik Lounge this Saturday (September 6) at 8:00 p.m., curated by Mark Soden of local duo Phog Masheen.
Soden says his latest Experimental Sounds show will feature Lee Scott doing raga-based synthesizer, Nihilanon doing narrative-adjacent noise, and Eleven Shadow with more synthesizer improvisation. While it’s all based on varying levels of experimentation, Soden makes the distinction between what he calls “synthetic” music, or synthesizer-based music, and perhaps the lesser known “noise” music.
“Noise uses an aggregation of things including guitar pedals, samplers, and maybe some synths and a microphone and modifying all of that and blending it together to make their sound.”
Soden’s avant-electro-junkshop duo Phog Masheen will also be playing, who, like Nihilanon, will bring a narrative to their unpredictable improvisation. Traditionally, Soden and his partner Francine can be witnessed playing modified trumpet, banging on pots and pans, manipulating electronics, all while storytelling on esoteric subjects.
“You can expect a narrative. We tell a story––usually a short history of the preamble––and we have recently done the short history of Kleenex, we have done a short history of saltine crackers, we have done a short history of microphones.”
The Experimental Sounds show is at the Beatnik Lounge this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free, all ages welcome.
