Heavy winter rains have resulted in a drastic increase in seasonal grasses and weeds throughout the Morongo Basin. The annual removal of this vegetation against roadways is necessary to allow firefighters safe passage through wildfire zones and to reduce the length and intensity of wildfires overall. Beginning on March 11, members of the Joshua Tree National Park vegetation and fire management staff began the process of removing the excessive vegetation from along the Covington Flats road system and will remain in the area for the next several weeks.
