FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE FROM SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY FIRE

As of 8:48 p.m. (Friday, 5/27) BY Battalion Chief Mike McClintock

Firefighters continued to work the Elk Fire in Yucca Valley throughout today (Friday, 5/27). More than 60 firefighters worked on containment lines, mop-up and patrolling the fires’ edge for hotspots. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Helicopter 554 assisted with bucket drops throughout the day, helping cool hot spots & give aerial reconnaissance.

More accurate mapping today placed the fire at 431 acres. No additional acres burned, as the acreage change is due to more precise mapping. Firefighters were successful with increasing containment from 30% to 50% & had great success in keeping the fire to yesterdays footprint.

Cause – San Bernardino County Sheriff made two arrests yesterday. See the below link for San Bernardino County Sheriff’s press release.

This evening San Bernardino County Fire (SBCOFD) has exited unified command with the National Park Service.  SBCOFD will continue to have a presence & work the area that burned on local responsibility area (LRA).

Tonight (Friday, 5/27) crews will continue to patrol & mop-up the fire working to keep the fire in its footprint and increase containment. We continue to ask the public to steer clear of the fire area as firefighters and equipment are working the area. Thanks to everyone for their patience, flexibility & understanding.
