In yesterday’s primary election, only the top two vote-getters will be on the ballot in the November general election. Early returns show Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom took first place for governor; Republican John Cox will face him November. Senator Dianne Feinstein easily advanced to the general election in November with 44 percent. Her opponent, with 97 percent of precincts reporting, will be Democratic challenger Kevin DeLeon who garnered 11.3 percent of the votes.
Joshua Tree resident Marge Doyle, who was challenging Republican Paul Cook of Yucca Valley for the 8 th Congressional District, lost her bid to be on the November ballot with Cook by 760 votes to far-right Republican Tim Donnelly, who had 16,024 votes to her 15,264 votes. Cook easily led with 41.5 percent, or 29,403 votes.
Republican Assemblyman Chad Mayes of Yucca Valley took second place to Democrat Deni Antionette Mazingo for California’s 42nd Assembly District. For state senate, Republican Shannon Grove and Democrat Ruth Musser-Lopez will be on the November ballot.
Jason Anderson bested incumbent Michael Ramos for district attorney. And the Morongo Basin’s representative on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, Democrat James Ramos, ran for Assembly District 40, and came in second to Republican Henry Gomez Nickel.
In Yucca Valley, Measure L, which would have allowed commercial cultivation and processing of cannabis in Yucca Valley, was soundly defeated 68 percent to 32 percent.
All the state propositions passed except Prop 70, which would have required a one-time, two-thirds vote in each legislative chamber in 2024 or thereafter to pass a spending plan for revenue from the state's cap-and-trade program.
