EDISON TO ROLL OUT NEW RATES BASED ON THE TIME OF USE

Major changes are afoot for Edison customers, including those in the Morongo Basin. Reporter David Haldane explains…
If your lifestyle is somewhat flexible, you may be in for lower electricity rates. If it isn’t, well, not so much.
That’s the bottom line regarding Southern California Edison’s new rate scales set to begin for some as early as next year. Called Time-of-Use, the new system basically charges customers based on when they use the electricity; thus, watching TV during peak hours such as weekday summer afternoons will cost more than watching it during weeknights or weekends.
Generally, an SCE spokesman said, rates during peak hours will be higher than they are now while off-peak rates will lower. Starting next year, he said, the company plans to shift 400,000 customers to the new system, with the remainder getting there by 2020.
Don’t worry, though, there’s an out; if you don’t like the new system, you’ll still be able to switch back to the old one for at least the next three years.
