For over half a century, Earth Day has been a celebration of love and this year, the Beatnik Lounge is hosting activities with this year’s global theme being “Invest in our Planet.” From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Plant Parenthood will be giving away five Velvet Mesquite trees and selling the rest for up to $25. Also at 4:00 p.m., Every Leaf Speaks Botanical Studies will demonstrate how to process and prepare Prickly Pear cactus. Bring a cup to sample a cactus-based beverage.At 4:45 p.m., Voices of Stewards for Joshua Trees will provide updates on the protection of the Western Joshua Tree and the Cima Dome Restoration Project. At 5:15, local musician Randy Smith will perform live jazz. At 5:30 p.m., attendees can learn to make their own kombucha, a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast filled with probiotics which supports a healthy immune system. At 5:45 p.m., Jessica Leigh Studd will perform spoken word poetry in honor of Mother Earth. At 6:00 p.m., the Joshua Basin Water District will present on “Living like a Desert Native.” At 6:30 p.m., the Joshua Tree Cultural Preservation Center will lead a group meditation. All day long, there will be an exchange of seeds, cuttings and rooted plants so bring some from home and prepare to trade. The Beatnik Lounge is located at 61597 29 Palms Hwy in Joshua Tree.
