The holiday season has arrived in full swing. Here are some ways to conserve water while preparing that holiday feast for loved ones from near and far. Reporter Joe Rego, has your drought conservation tips…
Think preparation and clean up. Select the proper pan for the proper task. Large pans use more energy, take more time to heat, and use more water due to evaporation. Food cooked in small amounts of water retain more nutrients and flavor. Save the large pans for soaking vegetables and fruits, instead of rinsing them. Defrost and thaw food in the refrigerator not with running water. Reuse pan soaking water whenever possible. The same water used to cleanse fruits and vegetables, can be repurposed to soak dirty dishes and water plants. Don’t forget the ice cubes from ice cooler, are great for irrigation. If you hand wash dishes scrape first. One side of the sink soap the other clear water for rinse. Dunk and wipe, not running water. Large pans scrape and soak. Think compost not garbage disposal whenever possible. Dishwashers are good and use less water than hand wash. Do not overdo with the pre-rinse cycle. A little thought goes a long way as we enjoy our Holiday Feast and battle the drought.
