DRIVERS HIT TWO PEDESTRIANS SATURDAY IN SEPARATE CRASHES; ONE KILLED, ONE INJURED

Drivers hit two pedestrians in separate crashes Saturday, and one was killed in the collision. At 6:15 a.m., Raymond Walls, 67, of Cabazon, was driving his 2004 Ford F-150 pick-up truck eastbound on the highway near Whitefeather Road about 6:15 a.m. Just east of Whitefeather Road, a still-unidentified 20-year-old woman from Yucca Valley was standing in the highway in the number one lane when she was hit by Walls, who was driving about 45 to 50 miles per hour. The woman sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.

Then about 11:15 a.m., Jana Brown, 58, of Yucca Valley, was at the southeast corner of the crosswalk at Hallee Road and the Highway in Joshua Tree. Martha Henderson, 58, of Yucca Valley, was in her 2002 Chevy Malibu southbound on Hallee Road, waiting for the green light to turn eastbound on the highway. When the crosswalk sign illuminated, Brown started crossing the intersection and was struck by Henderson, who failed to yield to Brown in the crosswalk. Jana Brown suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center. The California Highway Patrol is investigating both crashes.
