The driver of a rented U-Haul was arrested on suspicion of injury hit and run and resisting arrest in Twentynine Palms.
On March 18 at around 9:15 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a traffic collision on Twentynine Palms Highway and Mesquite Springs Road in Twentynine Palms. Deputies say that the victim was in their vehicle when they were struck by a U-Haul van with an Arizona license plate, which then fled the scene.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The van was located near Twentynine Palms Highway and Park Blvd in Joshua Tree. Deputies say the van had damage consistent with the collision, and contacted a suspect standing next to the van, identified as Jan Guthrie, a 40 year-old transient. Deputies say Guthrie was detained but failed to cooperate and resisted arrest before he was eventually placed into handcuffs. Deputies conducted further investigation and learned Guthrie was the solo occupant and driver of the U-Haul van.
Jason Guthrie was arrested on suspicion of hit and run and resisting an officer, and is being held at the West Valley Detention Center without bail.
