DOWNTOWN JOSHUA TREE TARGETED FOR NIGHT TIME LIGHT REDUCTION

Central Joshua Tree is the target area for a program aimed at reducing night-time light pollution. Reporter Dan Stork shines a light on the Dark Skies Alliance effort…
Joshua Tree resident Victoria Fuller was eager to show and tell about an effort to get residents to install more night-sky-friendly lighting. “This lighting retrofit project we started working on this last August. We sent out flyers to the central area of Joshua Tree, offering them a free light exchange to the night-sky-friendly light, and we have initially 50 of them that we’re putting on outside front porch lights. Our aim is to change the architectural lighting and show individuals that you still have all the safety lighting you need but you’re not impacting your neighbors.” Why Joshua Tree? Victoria Fuller told us her group was advised by Luke Sabala, a scientist with Joshua Tree National Park: “He looked across the Morongo Basin to see where we could initially get the most impact by changing the lighting.” For more information, visit mbdarkskiesalliance.org.
