Urinetown the Musical” is surprising audiences as theater-goers are getting over the title and getting over to Theatre 29. Reporter Rebecca Havely has more…
Theatre 29 audiences have been selling out as theatre-goers realize “Urinetown the Musical” is not what they expected. Toilet humor is not the main focus of this dark, edgy comedy; rather it’s a light, witty look at how greed and corruption can impact us all. A futuristic tale of a terrible water shortage leads to a government-enforced ban on public toilets. Citizens must use public amenities regulated by the evil, Urine Good Company—until a young hero plans a revolution and leads them to freedom. The show’s narrator, Officer Lockstock, portrayed by Easy Boos, advances the plot with his droll, tongue-in-cheek delivery. The show while on Broadway garnered 10 Tony Award nominations, reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical can be. Desert Theatre League award winning director Gary Daigneault says, “Selecting ‘Urintown’ for Theatre 29 was an artistic risk but that risk is paying off.”
