As the weather continues to warm in our desert, changes are making their way to your garden. Reporter Hilary Sloan offers these desert-smart gardening tips…
Starting with water, the best time to water your garden is before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m., this reduces evaporation for your thirsty plants. Be sure to maintain a good mulch of organic matter covering garden soil throughout the summer to hold in moisture, rock mulch may also be used. Remove deadhead flowers, unless you are collecting seeds, to stimulate repeat blooming. And don’t forget that some native plants semi-hibernate during high heat months for preservation until cooler fall temperatures.
