DESERT-SMART GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

The weather is starting to warm up in our desert and with changes in the weather come changes in your garden. The Joshua Basin Water District recommends watering only during the warm time of day between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. It is also good practice to routinely check your property’s landscape irrigation lines during watering time to be sure there are no breaks from overnight freezes. Reporter Cassidy Taylor offers these January gardening tips…

To help your desert-smart landscape look its best, now is a great time to prune evergreens like juniper, pines, and cypress. You should also prune dense trees to avoid wind damage and make sure young trees are well-staked. For overnight protection when frost threatens, cover delicate plants with large cardboard boxes, old sheets, or tarps. Consider setting irrigation timers to off, and manually water in response to irregular winter weather, based on winds or rain.
