DESERT INSTITUTE OFFERS HIKING AND ART CLASSES

In this pre-holiday lull, residents may consider exploring our glorious desert landscape—either directly on foot or through a delicate paintbrush. The Desert Institute has some ideas and reporter Heather Clisby has the details…

The Desert Institute, the educational arm of Joshua Tree National Park, is offering two classes in November designed to intrigue the hiker and the artist, or both.

Kevin Powell

On Saturday, November 9, local author and photographer Kevin Powell will lead the way to Crown Prince Lookout, a former WWII military point. Attendees can expect a 2.6 mile hike with a 200-foot elevation gain. Powell will provide historical context and the view is memorable, though some rock scrambling is required. Class is 8 a.m. until noon. Cost is $35 for Joshua Tree National Park Association members and $45 for non-members.

That same day, local artist Monica Lynne Mahoney will lead the class “Watercolor Field Painting: Exploring a Sense of Place.” Mahoney will teach basic watercolor and water-based pencil techniques. Previous drawing experience is helpful but not required. Class is 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Cost is $85 for Joshua Tree National Park Association members and $95 for non-members.
