The Desert Institute, the educational arm of Joshua Tree National Park, is offering several classes over that first full weekend of December, everything from geology to photography. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…
Nature Nerds take note: The Desert Institute is offering several engaging classes December 7-9.
On Saturday, December 7, learn earth history in the class, “Geology and Cultural History of Cottonwood Spring” with geologic rock star, Ted Reeves. Expect to hike six miles and dig deep in the planet’s not-so-recent past.
Or, on that day, you could hike Summit Monument Peak with local writer and photographer Kevin Powell. This is a strenuous 6.4-mile hike but the breathtaking panoramic view really pays off.
Also on December 7, you can check out “Winter Light: Photographing the Desert Preserves” with Craig Fucile. Let your lens discover the beauty of Whitewater Preserve and Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve with mild ground-level hikes.
Or, commit the entire weekend, December 7-9, with “Desert Invertebrates: A Microscopy Primer” with Dr. Paul DeLey. This three-day session brings a hard focus to the tiny desert fauna. Two half-day lab sessions will provide hands-on opportunities for isolating microscopic invertebrates.
