DESERT HOT SPRINGS MAN ACCUSED IN TWENTYNINE PALMS ARSON

Sheriff’s officials have released the name of the man arrested in connection with an arson in Twentynine Palms last week. On Tuesday, December 29, about 3:45 a.m., firefighters and deputies were called to a home in the 74900 block of Alta Loma Drive for a fire that destroyed a boat and garage, and damaged the home. After an investigation, deputies determined that Steven Mayo, 35, of Desert Hot Springs, had been visiting his girlfriend in Twentynine Palms when they began arguing. Mayo left, and a short time later, the woman noticed the detached garage was on fire. The woman and her father were able to evacuate safely and called for help. Deputies located Mayo’s vehicle and detained him for questioning. Steven Mayo was arraigned in Joshua Tree Superior Court Thursday on suspicion of arson with his bail set at $300,000, and is being held on a no-bail probation hold.
