DESERT DISCOVERY DAY SATURDAY AT MOJAVE DESERT LAND TRUST

Spring is just around the corner and the folks at the Mojave Desert Land Trust want to celebrate. The MDLT is hosting a Desert Discovery Day, a family-friendly event that will mark the grand opening of its Desert Discovery Garden this Saturday. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…

Less than a week before Spring officially begins, the Mojave Desert Land Trust will honor the new season with its first annual Desert Discovery Day on Saturday, March 14.

This free event will feature live music by the Shadow Mountain Band, guest speakers, an interpretive hike to MDLT’s Windy Gap property, and the long-awaited ribbon cutting of the Desert Discovery Garden. The event will also include food vendors and shopping opportunities.

Desert Discovery Day will be held at MDLT Headquarters, 60124 29 Palms Highway in Joshua Tree beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

8:30 a.m.: Hike to Windy Gap led by Peter Satin.

9:30 a.m.: Desert Discovery Garden Ribbon Cutting.

10 a.m.-1 p.m.: Open House with music, vendors, food, and these workshops:

10:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.: “Acquiring Land for Conservation: How and Why,” by Allyson Lavender and Geary Hund.

11 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.: “California Desert Wildflowers: Where to See Them and How to Protect Them,” by Madena Asbell.

11:45 a.m. – noon: “Helping Your Kids (Safely) Experience the Desert,” by Mary Cooke-Rhyne.

12:30 p.m.-12:45 p.m.: Vertical Mulching Demonstration by Peter Satin.
