Department of Defense Expands Military Parental Leave Program

On January 4th, 2023, the Department of Defense released a memorandum entitled “Expansion of the Military Parental Leave Program.” The expansion, which takes precedence over previous DOD issuances and service regulations, establishes a 12-week parental leave for non-birth parents, adoptive parents, and eligible foster parents.

For birth parents, the 12-week leave will begin after and in addition to a convalescent leave, which is determined on an individual basis. Service members who are not birth parents but have caregiver leave will transition to the new program for a total combined leave of 12 weeks.
