The Sheriff’s Department recently released an advisory about community safety and rumors on social media. Reporter Rebecca Havely has more…
Sheriff John McMahon states in an advisory notice that they are aware of recent rumors being spread on social media. The rumors claim that law enforcement is advising the public to avoid certain areas—such as movie theaters and shopping malls—due to threats. The claims of threats on our community are unsubstantiated, says McMahon. He asks that citizens be wary of possible hoax messages and advises residents to follow verified law enforcement’s own social media accounts and press releases. He also states that the office’s primary responsibility is to make sure our community is safe. To report any tips to local law enforcement agencies you may go to law enforcement verified accounts on both Twitter and Facebook, or call the FBI at 800-225-5324 and choose option 4.
