COUNTY SETS NEW RECORD FOR COVID-19 CASES AND HOSPITALIZATION

San Bernardino County broke its record for highest number of new cases in a day with 4,123 new coronavirus cases Thursday, December 10. The county also broke its record for the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19, with 1,098 in hospitals with coronavirus Wednesday. There are currently 226 people in county intensive care units, another record. The average number of fatalities was eight per day in the past week.

Here in the Morongo Basin we have had 923 confirmed cases and 30 deaths: Yucca Valley with 428 cases and 23 deaths; Twentynine Palms with 282 cases and one death; Joshua Tree, 125 cases and four deaths; Morongo Valley 69 cases and one death; Landers, 16 cases and one death; and Pioneertown with three cases.

State numbers also show that ICU availability in Southern California has further shrunk to 7.7%, which means ICUs in the region are 92.3% full.

Here are the latest numbers in San Bernardino County

Confirmed cases: 115,641 total, up 4,123 from Wednesday, averaging 2,362 reported per day in the past week

Deaths: 1,209 total, up one from Wednesday, averaging 7.9 reported per day in the past week

Hospital survey: 1,094 confirmed and 92 suspected patients hospitalized Wednesday, including 226 confirmed and 5 suspected patients in the ICU, with 24 of 25 facilities reporting. The number of confirmed patients is up 21% from a week earlier.

People tested: 1,265,684 total, up 19,966 from Wednesday, averaging 16,342 reported per day in the past week

Resolved cases (estimate): 99,856 total, up 1,898 from Wednesday, averaging 1,495 per day in the past week

Metrics tracked by the state:

ICU availability: 7.7% across Southern California

New cases per day per 100,000 residents: 61.1

Case rate adjusted for testing volume: 54.2

Test positivity rate: 16.9% (20.6% in socioeconomically challenged neighborhoods)

What that means: Southern California is under a stay-home order because of the low ICU availability. When that is lifted, San Bernardino County will return to a color-coded tier with restrictions based on the other metrics.
