COUNTY SCHOOLS RESPOND TO GOVERNOR’S STATEMENT ON REOPENING

During a coronavirus briefing on Tuesday, April 28, Governor Gavin Newsom discussed the possibility of reopening California schools as early as late July to reduce what he called “learning loss” for students, despite ongoing distance learning efforts. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond began collaborating with education groups on Wednesday, April 29, to determine what would need to be accomplished for schools to reopen while protecting the health and safety of students, families, teachers, and staff. According to San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Ted Alejandre, there is currently no plan to reopen any county schools early, citing mid-August on the county school calendar as the scheduled date when students can return to school for the 2020-2021 school year. Alejandre went on to say that school district superintendents countywide are meeting often with county health officials, carefully considering all factors for the upcoming school year with the priority of protecting the health and safety of students, staff, and families.
