County says property taxes need to increase for Landers to continue road maintenance

The Landers Homestead Valley Association meeting was held last night (1/12).

The Morongo Basin Sheriff’s department report was presented by a newcomer to our local force, Detective Trisha Dean. The King of the Hammers annual event will run from January 22nd to February 7th this year, with the race of Kings taking place on the last day. Law enforcement will be out in numbers, including rangers from Bureau of Land Management and California Highway Patrol, as well as off highway vehicles patrolling on weekends.

San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Dawn Rowe’s representative Glen Harris reported that the annual Point-in-Time count of the homeless will take place on Thursday January 22nd 2026 from 7:00 a.m. Volunteers will attend an in-person or virtual training. This count is critical to continue to secure grant funding to assist the unsheltered.

Landers’ own Astronomy expert Ralph Megna presented his What’s UP in the Sky series, this time Orion: The Winter Constellation was the subject.

This meeting was immediately followed by another presentation by Henry Mac, representative from San Bernardino County Special districts road maintenance. Mr. Mac made it quite clear that the annual charge for road maintenance on property taxes needs to be raised from $20.00 to $75.00 per year so unpaved roads can be graded and maintained properly. A maximum 3% annual inflation rate would also need to be added for cost of living increases. The majority of attendees were in favor of raising the annual fee and agreed that a maximum 3% inflation rate was reasonable.
