San Bernardino County, which entered the less-restrictive orange tier last week, reported a slight rise in coronavirus case rates Tuesday (April 13). The rate of new cases per day per 100,000 residents rose to 3.8, from 3.4 last week. This marks the first time since January that the case rate went up. Also Tuesday, the county reported 90 more coronavirus cases and three additional deaths. Ninety-two people were in the hospital, a slight drop from the previous day’s report. The county’s positivity rate fell slightly to 1.9%, from 2.0% last week, while the positivity rate for disadvantaged areas stayed the same, at 2.0%.
More than 900,000 vaccine doses have been administered in the county. Total doses given to county residents rose from 800,000 to 900,000 over the past six days.
San Bernardino County has temporarily paused distribution and use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with recommendations made by state and federal health agencies. The pause was issued in response to six reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. None of the six cases were in California and more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered in the U.S. Anyone who has received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and who develops a severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath is urged to contact their health care provider.
