San Bernardino County has reported 18 new coronavirus deaths, the highest one-day increase since the pandemic started. As of Wednesday, May 13, 138 county residents have died from COVID-19, a 15 percent increase from the day before, when there were 120 deaths, according to the county’s online dashboard.
Here in the Morongo Basin the number are unchanged with 42 confirmed cases and 3 deaths; Yucca Valley has 16 with one death; Joshua Tree with 15 and two deaths; Morongo Valley with six; and Twentynine Palms with five.
Lana Culp, public health spokeswoman said, “It’s too early for a definitive explanation for the large rise in reported deaths and more research is needed.”
In the county of more than 2.1 million residents, 33,287 people have been tested, of which 3,153, or 9.5 percent were positive. Testing was up 2.2 percent and positive cases were up 2.4 percent from Tuesday, May 12. The time it takes for the virus to double is 13 days.
