Suspicions of financial mismanagement surrounding Hope Academy Charter School in recent months have been confirmed in a damning, new report. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz has details …
The report just issued by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team, a state investigative agency commissioned to look into Hope Academy by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, states “There is sufficient documentation to demonstrate that fraud, mismanagement and misappropriation of the charter school funds and assets may have occurred.… These findings should be of great concern to the governing boards of Hope Academy and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and require immediate intervention.” Just last month, the Morongo Unified School District refused to renew Hope Academy’s charter, which expires June 30, 2016. Much of the nefarious conduct is traced back to the school’s former superintendent/director, his wife and their relatives who received sweet deals, large bonuses, and other extraordinary perks all under the nose of Hope Academy’s Governing Board. The matter is expected to go to the district attorney’s office which will determine who will face what criminal charges.
