Back in July, property owners in Copper Mountain Mesa, Flamingo Heights, Landers, and Yucca Mesa were surveyed to determine their support for increases in road maintenance fees in return for improved service. In this report, Mike Lipsitz brings us survey results and some background…
The San Bernardino County Special Districts Department, which manages road maintenance in each community, conducted the survey. In the 25 to 30 years since the five area special road districts were established, residents have rejected every attempt to raise the annual fee. The fee ranges from $15 in Flamingo Heights to $35 in the western part of Yucca Mesa. Predictably, the stagnant revenue, service cost increases, and compliance regulation have led to deteriorating road conditions in these areas. Now the survey results are in; they indicate residents of Copper Mountain Mesa, Flamingo Heights, and Yucca Mesa (east) are willing to consider fee increases, while property owners in Landers and Yucca Mesa (west) would oppose any increase. In the next step, the Special Districts Department plans to work with local groups in the areas that responded favorably.
