Representatives from County Special Districts this week will reach out to some unincorporated communities to talk about declining road maintenance and options for improving road conditions in the future. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz has details…
Hundreds of miles of unpaved roads in the Basin’s unincorporated communities are maintained with funds collected as a service charge on owner’s property taxes. Grading occurs as the funds allow. These service charges were set in the 1970s and 80s. Residents of Flamingo Heights, for example, pay $15 per parcel each year; property owners in Landers and Copper Mountain Mesa pay $20 a year. That $15 or $20 graded a lot more road in the 1980s than it does in 2016. Copper Mountain residents are invited to meet with county reps at 6 p.m. tonight at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst. Special Districts will be back this Wednesday evening to meet with Landers residents at 6 p.m. and residents from Flamingo Heights at 7 p.m. Both Wednesday night meetings are at Belfield Hall on Reche Road just east of the Landers Post Office.
