For the first time since 2015, the county has opened a short period for residents to apply for federal housing assistance, commonly known as Section 8 housing. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has the details for those who want to jump on this opportunity …
To qualify, an applicant must earn 80 percent or less of the median income for the county. That is about $38,000 for a single person or $54,000 annually for a family of four. To be considered for the voucher program, applicants must enter a lottery to get on a waiting list. The application process closes at 4 p.m. on February 25. Currently, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development gives the county about $7.3 million monthly to provide housing assistance. About 10,000 households in our county are receiving that assistance. To apply, follow this link: https://yvportal.hacsb.com/.
If you don’t have Internet access, call 877-425-4004 for a list of locations with free computer access. Note that the application process is free, so steer clear of any websites that want to charge you for the application. After submitting your application, be patient, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Housing Authority suggests it could take five to seven years to get through the waiting list.
