COVID-19 vaccines are working, according to the weekly COVID-19 update from San Bernardino County. The County’s Department of Public Health cites that the overwhelming majority of county COVID-19 cases, nearly 96 percent, are among the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated population. Out of 26,232 COVID-19 cases, 25,161 were among the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 1,071 were among the fully vaccinated.
Statewide, COVID-19 case rates were nearly six times higher in people who were unvaccinated (20.7 per 100,000) compared to those who are fully vaccinated (3.5 per 100,000). Case rates among the unvaccinated are highest among 18-to-49-year-olds and African-Americans in California, which are increasing more rapidly than any other group, according to the state Department of Public Health.
Of concern is the Delta variant, which during the week of August 4, accounted for 98 percent of the 127 COVID-19 cases sequenced in San Bernardino County.
The county says that over 49 percent of its residents above the age of 12 are now vaccinated against COVID-19 and they’ve been doing so well with their vaccination effort, that state public health officials have reached out to ask for help with strategies and best practices.
