A San Bernardino County firefighter is in a fight for his life, and his fellow firefighters are rallying to help him and his family. Engineer Cory Norton has been a firefighter with the county since 2005, and spent many of those years serving in the Morongo Basin. Early in his career, Norton fell while wearing an air tank and broke his back. He returned to work after surgeries and rehabilitation, but went to a doctor last year for back pain, at which time doctors discovered a cancerous tumor near the spot where his spine had been broken. Surgeons removed the tumor and replaced one of his vertebrae. Norton is now scheduled for chemotherapy, radiation, and more surgeries. Managing editor Tami Roleff says county firefighters are organizing a “Fill the Boot” fundraiser for Norton and his family…
Firefighter Cory Norton’s cancer, epithelioid sarcoma, is so rare and in such a difficult spot to treat that his oncologist has never dealt with a case like this in his 28-year-career. Even though Norton has insurance, the costs for Norton and his family will be enormous. San Bernardino County firefighters will be at several locations in Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley Saturday collecting donations. In Joshua Tree, firefighters will be at the farmer’s market from 9 to 1. In Yucca Valley, firefighters will be in front of the “new” Stater Brothers, on the east end of town, and in front of Starbucks and Applebee’s from 9 to 3. Donations can also be brought to Norton’s former station, Yucca Valley’s Fire Station 41, at any time. A link to a GoFundMe site can be found with this story at z1077fm.com.
