The San Bernardino County Planning Commission will try again to hold a meeting on a controversial 248-unit Housing development in Joshua Tree tomorrow morning. Last week, technical problems saw the meeting, which was supposed to be teleconferenced into the Joshua Tree County building complex, postponed. Reporter David Haldane has details…
They say the third time’s the charm. The county Planning Commission is hoping to do a little better than that tomorrow as it meets for the second time to consider a controversial housing development in Joshua Tree.
Nearly three dozen Basin residents were gathered for a public hearing on the matter last week when a power failure forced a postponement. Though commissioners meet in San Bernardino, the proceedings are broadcast live to the county’s Teleconferencing Center on Joshua Tree’s Whitefeather Road.
The question at hand: whether to approve Alta Mira, a gated 248-unit development proposed on 105 acres next to Friendly Hills Elementary School. Though the county’s Land Use Services Department is recommending approval, the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council strongly opposes the project as environmentally degrading and inconsistent with the area’s rustic character.
Tomorrow’s hearing gets underway at 9 a.m.
