The Yucca Valley Town Council gave their town manager a raise last night before hearing the Mayor outline the state of the Town. Managing Editor Tami Roleff was there and filed this report…
With no public comment, the Yucca Valley Town Council approved a raise and a 3-year contract extension for its town manager during its meeting last night. Noting that Curtis Yakimow earns substantially less than town managers in other nearby municipalities—even with his raise to $168,000 annually—the council enthusiastically and unanimously approved the contract changes.
In the State of the Town address, each council member addressed highlights, opportunities, and challenges facing the town. George Huntington spoke on the town’s history from its incorporation 25 years ago; Rick Denison spoke on public works and infrastructure: new parks, renovations, the sewer project, and street maintenance. Mayor Bob Leone spoke on public safety. Robert Lombardo said the town is committed to improving the quality of life for its residents with new housing, new retail stores, and recreational events, such as summer aquatics, Grubstake Days, and the orchid fest. And Merl Abel spoke on planning for the future.
The council also heard about a $1.2 million budget surplus, due to increased tax revenue and lower expenses. The council directed staff to transfer $600,000 into the capital projects reserve fund for infrastructure, $300,000 into the retiree obligation reserve account; and $300,000 into the capital projects reserve fund.
