In Thursday’s closed session of the Copper Mountain College Board of Trustees, the trustees approved a settlement agreement to join other Morongo Basin agencies in making the switch from at-large elections to by-district elections. The move was in response to a lawsuit which claimed at-large elections violate the California Voting Rights Act. The transition will begin after the 2020 census data is released. Part of the settlement includes paying the plaintiff’s attorneys fees of $30,000.
In other business, the board discussed the success of the English as a Second Language Program, which provides language instruction, hot meals, childcare, and tutoring.
Also mentioned was an event earlier this month, in which 140 high school seniors visited the campus through the Rise program. The Rise program helps high school seniors transition into college.
The board agreed the March Board of Trustee meeting would address a new enrollment study session in conjunction with the Morongo Basin Unified School District.
