COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL BEATS #1 RANKED TEAM

By Brittain Kelly

It was “one for the ages” Friday night inside the Bell Center as the Copper Mountain College Fighting Cacti took on the number 1-ranked team in the state, Fullerton College, and won, 69-63.

From the start of the game, Copper Mountain took control. Great execution on offense and discipline on defense allowed CMC to take an 11-point advantage into the half 38-27.

The second half was full of fireworks as Fullerton would not go down in defeat easily. Consecutive clutch plays were made down the stretch by committee. Freshman guard Will Valsien stepped to the free throw line and sank two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the victory for the Fighting Cacti 69-63.

Dominique Anderson had a stellar game for CMC with 18 points and 10 rebounds; and Will Valsien chipped in 13 points for the Fighting Cacti. With the win, Copper Mountain College improves to 13-8 on the year and 3-2 in the Orange Empire conference.

Next up for CMC is Riverside City College on Wednesday, January 30; tip-off is at 5 p.m. at Copper Mountain College.
