It was a heartbreaker for Copper Mountain College on Monday as they traveled to Los Angeles to take on Santa Monica College. In the first half Copper Mountain played some amazing basketball, jumping out on Santa Monica and taking a big lead into the half, 41-24.
The Fighting Cacti must have left their “mojo” in the locker room because they started the second half extremely flat. Santa Monica was able to chop down the Fighting Cacti’s lead and forced the game into overtime with a 77-77 tie at the end of regulation play.
A couple of unfortunate fouls and miscues in the overtime period hurt CMC and they went on to lose, 95-87.
Anthony Rice led CMC scorers with 25 points. Dshaun Barrett added 16 points; Will Valsien scored 15; Dillion Voyles contributed 13 points; and Zack Kroker chipped in 12 points to round off the top scorers for the Fighting Cacti.
With the loss, Copper Mountain falls to 9-6 on the year. The team has a couple weeks off for the holidays and will be back in action January 4 at Imperial Valley College; tip-off is at 5 p.m.
