Copper Mountain College Foundation has chosen Reuben Schmit of Morongo Valley as the 2018 Greenleaf Scholarship winner. Schmit, who attends Yucca Valley High School, was chosen out of a highly competitive field. The scholarship will pay tuition, books and fees plus living expenses while Schmit attends Copper Mountain College. The same expenses will be paid while he attends a university to complete a baccalaureate degree. Endowed by local banker F. Roy Greenleaf Jr., the scholarship is awarded each year to a promising student who is interested in learning, is success oriented, has performed well in school, and shows a desire to return to the Morongo Basin upon completion of his education. Schmit, a volunteer for Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, plans on attaining a degree in engineering and says he “wishes to use my engineering experience to help the environment and the world around me.” The Foundation will host a Greenleaf Award Ceremony April 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the front lobby of the Bell Center to honor Reuben Schmit and recognize the six other finalists for the Greenleaf Scholarship: Briauna Archer, Samantha Bauer, Karl Magwood, Timothy Niles, Morgan Novak, and Kloee Scaccianoce.
The ceremony is open to the public.
