“Third time was a charm” for the Copper Mountain College men’s basketball team Saturday morning as they picked up their first win of the season against Grossmont College 61-42. With the win, Copper Mountain improves to 1-2 on the year. Next Up for The Fighting Cacti is their home opener against Barstow College, Wednesday, November 7, at 7 p.m. at the Bell Center.
Coaches said it seemed as if everything started to finally click for the young Fighting Cacti as they put on a solid all-around team effort. Great play early on from freshman forward Zach Kroker and sophomore “Big Man” Kenny Bates helped set the tone for CMC, and the Fighting Cacti would go into the half with the lead 25-17. Nifty passing from sophomore point guard Anthony Rice and the sharp shooting of hometown standout and freshman guard D’shaun Barrett of Twentynine Palms that would eventually propel Copper Mountain to a big lead. D’shaun Barrett led all scorers with a game high 14 points, Kenny Bates had 10 points and six rebounds and Anthony Rice chipped in six points and nine assists.
