Thousands of UFO enthusiasts from around the globe are expected to congregate this weekend at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center for Contact in the Desert. The fourth annual UFO convention kicks off Friday and runs through Monday, June 6. The convention will feature guest speakers including Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, star of the television series “Ancient Aliens”; “Chariots of the Gods” author Erich von Daniken; and George Noory, host of the radio program “Coast to Coast AM.” A feature is Whitley Streiber, author of the 1987 book “Communion,” that was later made into a film about his alleged abduction by extraterrestrials from his cabin in upstate New York in 1983. A conference highlight will be a panel of more than 40 scientists, historians and researchers discussing the CIA’s Jan. 21 release of previously classified UFO files from the 1940s through the 1960s. A popular “Contact in the Desert” attraction is Morongo Basin historian Barbara Harris, who gives guided tours of Giant Rock, a haunt for UFO aficionados and a hotspot for UFO conventions in the 60’s and 70’s.
